Time and again, during my association with Gurudev, he has always stressed on the importance of love over mere rituals. I have written down one such experience of mine, which I feel was his way of teaching me that.
When Gurudev visited my place for the first time, he was maintaining silence. Since I got to know about his plan of visiting very late, I had a very short duration of time to prepare my house and be ready to receive him.
I was extremely thrilled but I was a bit upset about not being able to offer any flowers to him.( and I guess there were multiple other things as well, which I did not have)

When it was time for him to leave, I bowed down and told him -" Gurudev, I am extremely grateful that you graced this house of ours. Please forgive me for not being able to receive you in the appropriate way. I know, there are a lot of things that needed to be done, which I could not do".
Gurudev waved his hand a few times, as if saying -"No No".He then pointed to the heart as though,telling me -" I am looking only at your heart". This gesture, brought tears to my eyes and I bowed down to him mentally thanking GOD for Gurudev's presence in our lives.
