Vidhi's Khadi Chuan/Akshara Abhyasa

I had never heard of anyone in my family having his/her Akshara Abhyasa done earlier, neither did I have the privilege to attend one. But I do recall seeing a video of this ceremony being performed by Gurudev for a disciple's child in Puri. That I believe, must have left an impression on my mind. So, when I got to know a couple of months ago, that Gurudev would be visiting Hyderabad in June, I had this sudden desire to have Vidhi's Akshara Abhyasa. I wrote to Gurudev expressing my desire to have this ceremony done in his presence. He readily gave his consent over email.

The ongoing year is the 125th birth anniversary year of Paramahamsa Yogananda. To celebrate this occasion Kriya yoga initiation programs have been planned for the entire year across the globe. Hyderabad was chosen as the venue for initiation on the 11th of June.  Though Gurudev had given his confirmation, we still did not know when he would be available  and where we could have the ceremony done. On the 10th of June, a Kriya yoga talk/meeting had been organized at Sathya Sai Nigam hall in Hyderabad. Gurudev was also an invitee. So we decided to attend the event and sort out the details with him. We arrived early and took our seats in the hall. The moment Gurudev entered the hall, a big crowd of people surrounded him and by the time he got to his seat, there was a long line of people waiting to get his blessings.

We too joined the line and waited for our turn. I was thrilled with anticipation. I was about to meet him after a gap of several months. The line was moving slowly, but we dint have to wait too long, as the moment he saw us, he ushered us to come to him. Gurudev was very happy to see Vidhi. He asked to me to sit beside him on the empty seat. Samarpanananda baba was sitting on the other side. Mind reader that Gurudev is, before I could ask, Gurudev had already checked with Samarpanananda Baba and asked me to come to Kalinga hall ( the venue for initiation) the next day at 11 am. I thanked GOD and Gurudev and went back to my seat.

The next day all of us - Mother, Saurav, Vidhi and me reached Kalinga hall at 10:45 am. The initiations scheduled for that day were still mid-way. We sat at the end of the hall. Gurudev , Samarpanananda baba and 4 other yogacharya's were  seated, on the stage spread apart. Each of them was surrounded by a group of 4-5 people, who had come for initiation. From where I sat I could see Gurudev's smiling face. It had a definite glow and his presence was radiating a warmth all around. I found myself thinking - " How fortunate are these people who are getting initiated in his presence". It was a pleasure to see him perform the initiation. Gurudev must have initiated lakhs and lakhs of people, but here today, he still went about it with so much love and sincerity !  I had so much to learn.

As we waited our turn , at the back of the hall, Vidhi grew restless. She broke loose and started exploring the hall, moving randomly and smiling and talking to people around. This is when Gurudev spotted her and then waved at us, asking us to come up to him. We went up and then bowed at his feet. He smiled and asked us to sit down and make Vidhi sit on my lap. Knowing Saurav's love to click snaps, he directed a volunteer there to capture snaps of the proceedings and asked Saurav to sit beside me.

Mother handed over the new slate and chalk to Gurudev. Taking a pinch of haldi from a container, Gurudev smeared it on the top of the slate. He applied tilak on our foreheads, including Vidhi's. Then, after an invocation to Lord Ganesha, Gurudev wrote "AUM" in devanagiri script and handed over the chalk to Vidhi to follow suit. But to Vidhi, the concept of writing on a slate seemed very strange and so she refused to hold the chalk :). It was quite an effort to get her to write and in the process Gurudev wrote down the first letters in Hindi, English, Oriya and Bengali. In the end we did manage to have something on the slate with Vidhi partially holding the chalk. I was feeling relieved and grateful about the fact that, Vidhi did not cry during the entire process and neither was she frightened at the sight of Gurudev sitting beside her. Infact she had taken a liking to him and had looked at him intently as he performed the ceremony.

Before leaving, I thanked Master again but he waved me off, refusing to take any credit or acknowledgement. He enquired about our plans for the day and then as we took leave, ushered the next group to come over and resumed the kriya initiation activity which had been put on hold temporarily for Vidhi's khadi chuan.

Only Love is Essential

Time and again, during my association with Gurudev, he has always stressed on the importance of love over mere rituals. I have written down one such experience of mine, which I feel was his way of teaching me that.
When Gurudev visited my place for the first time, he was maintaining silence. Since I got to know about his plan of visiting very late, I had a very short duration of time to prepare my house and be ready to receive him.
I was extremely thrilled but I was a bit upset about not being able to offer any flowers to him.( and I guess there were multiple other things as well, which I did not have)
When it was time for him to leave, I bowed down and told him -" Gurudev, I am extremely grateful that you graced this house of ours. Please forgive me for not being able to receive you in the appropriate way. I know, there are a lot of things that needed to be done, which I could not do".
Gurudev waved his hand a few times, as if saying -"No No".He then pointed to the heart as though, telling me -" I am looking only at your heart". This gesture, brought tears to my eyes and I bowed down to him mentally thanking GOD for Gurudev's presence in our lives.

A passage that touched my heart

I came across the following beautifully composed passage in the book “The autobiography of an Indian Monk”. I could not help sharing it here.
“Salutations to my most Gracious Master, who led me through darkness to light! I was full of ignorance, but he showed me the path to Wisdom. I was deeply immersed in misery, but He was so kind as to swim with me to the shore of bliss. I had been constantly among half truths, but He took my hand and led me out of that maze. There had been a curtain between me and Him; solely by His benevolence was it drawn aside, so that I realized in full the meaning of his life.
Salutation, yea, thousands of salutations, to Him for having merged me, an insignificant drop, into the ocean of his being.”

Conversations with Gurudev - II

A month ago, there was an intra-office tennis tournament at office which I had taken part in. I lost in the finals of the singles event. I was a little disappointed with my performance. In the evening that day I wrote to Gurudev telling him about my loss and also that I needed to work on my fitness level and stamina.

Master’s response the next day was like a breath of fresh air. He wrote - “Congratulations for letting a friend win the trophy. Congratulations once again, for going till the finals”. This kind of reply was nowhere close to what I was expecting. But it made me feel good. Master was trying to show me a different perspective, a viewpoint which in today’s extremely competitive world, I had completely forgotten.

I learnt not to be too hard on myself.  "Enjoy the journey while it lasts !!".

Gurudev

This is one snap of Gurudev which I love!

Gurudev is forever smiling, reminding us always....that is the way to be.

Conversations with Gurudev

I remember a piece of conversation with Gurudev, during my last meeting.

Not being able to make it, for a visit to the holy place of Kailash I was a bit dejected during that time.
I asked Master - "Gurudev, people say that one must visit holy places/shrines/ashrams every now and then as it helps in spiritual progress, but I am not being able to do so..."

He smiled and wrote ( since he was maintaining silence) - " I have no desire to go anywhere. I am travelling for others. Holy place is within ( he underlined the word within) Make your heart and mind holy"

His answer gave me immense joy. My loving Master, had put my troubled heart at ease.

Miracle at Shirdi.

The title should not be the least bit surprising to anyone who is a Sai devotee. I have not come across a single Sai believer who hasn't had some or the other miraculous experience. The incident which I am writing about, took place during my last visit to Shirdi in the year 2010, April.

Saurav and me had taken an overnight bus to Shirdi. We reached the place early in the morning. After freshening up in the guest house, we headed straight to the the temple for darshan. There was a long queue, since it was a weekend. In our hurry to get in, we forgot to buy flowers for offering to Baba. I realized this after getting inside the main temple. I felt extremely bad, but there was nothing I could do. We were in the queue now and there was no way to get out and then join back again.

Walking slowly in the line, I approached the main Samadhi place. Standing near the Samadhi, I prayed to Baba and thanked him for coming into my life. Regretting the fact that I had nothing to offer, I walked out towards the exit gate. Beyond the exit door, lies one more room which finally leads out to the open area surrounding the temple. As I walked into this outer room, one man walked upto me, holding in his hand a small basket with a garland. He held out the basket to me, and told me -"Here this is for you". Before I could react, he had thrust the basket onto my hands and left. I was speechless. I tried searching for this man, but I could not locate him in the crowd. Realizing that, Baba had just played out one of his many miracles for me to witness, I decided to sneak back in through the exit door and offer, his own offering to him. I managed to go back in successfully, without any of the security or priests noticing this. I thanked him profusely for this wonderful and memorable experience and finally made my way out of the temple.

Such experiences are not limited to Shirdi. He listens to each and everyone who calls out to him sincerely, the place does not matter. Patience and  devotion is the key.
